Do I need Physical Therapy?

Sadly, not a lot of people even know what the heck physical therapy (AKA physiotherapy) is. It's not an easy thing to define. When it comes down to it, Physical Therapists are human movement experts.

PTs are the preferred provider for the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular injuries, as well as other conditions such as chronic pain, deconditioning, vestibular (balance) and neurological disorders, developmental delays, and post-surgical recovery.
In California, PTs are direct access providers--you do not need a referral. However, your insurance may require you to see your PCP first before offering coverage.

The cost of not getting PT

Poor access to the healthcare system, as well as toxic mentalities within workout culture means that many people wait too long to get help! Any problem that interferes with your ability to do what you want to do requires attention.

The cost of waiting too long: lost work days due to reinjury, development of secondary problems, expensive surgeries, medications with large copays, etc. Most complications can be avoided with early intervention!

What is right for you?

As with any service, the quality, ability and approachability of the practitioner can vary significantly. Someone may come highly recommended, but if you don't mesh, you're not going to get the best results.

Always go with your gut. Talk to someone at the PT clinic you are considering and if you don't feel a connection, move on! There are more than enough of us to go around, so find the right PT for you.
